A.I. use in Quantity Surveying
First , a full disclaimer. No A.I. was used in any aspect of writing, researching or proofreading this article. So expect it to have a few human-style flaws in it.
Motivated by rumours of Artificial Intelligence basically doing my job as a Q.S. in the not-to-distant future, I decided to be proactive about this; and asked it. "Evidence suggests that my profession of Quantity Surveying will be one most affected and even totally replaced by AI. How likely is that and how could i pivot or my profession in totality , to stay relevant . I would hope that AI could enhance what we do rather than a replacement."
No, it didn't send a laughing emoji back at me or say "exterminate".
This was the initial reply: ou’re absolutely right to be thinking ahead. The integration of AI into Quantity Surveying (QS) is accelerating — but replacement is not the most likely outcome for professionals who are adaptive, strategic, and value-driven
Do we really want A.I. to do everything for us?
More over-arching questions arise when thinking about this more.
What do we want our role to be in a future where Artificial Intelligence will be more broadly adopted and constantly improving?
I would like A.I. to do the mundane, boring , repetitive tasks for me and free me up to do the tasks and activities that interest and challenge me.
For my Estimating and Quantity Surveying work, I have a list of tasks that I want A.I. to do. These run along the lines of automating processes, generating report templates, training and up-skilling me in areas I am newly pushing into and generally assisting with feedback, drafts and analysis of data.
My aim is to use this to improve more insightful comments and advisory to Homeowners, Architects , Builders and Developers. To add some clarity and insights to the numbers and achieve a way forward with delivering your ideas confidently and creatively.
